Summary of "Victims of Stalking - The Damage Done!"

Being stalked would have to be one of the most terrifying experiences a person could endure. Literally plucked out of a seemingly normal life and thrown into one of harassment and persecution would be an incredible shock.

Being stalked can be soul destroying. Emotions would range from depression to loss of self-esteem and shame. A stalker wants total control of their victim and will put them through absolute hell in order to achieve this. The more vulnerable they can make their target feel the better for them. Using threats and coercion they are often able to isolate their petrified victims from any potential support. There is no trick in the book a stalker will not try to get their wicked way. Mental abuse is always at the heart of a stalkers assault and often- physical violence the weapon of choice.

The person at the centre of the stalking would be horrified at the sudden intrusion into their seemingly normal life. Once the initial shock of losing their privacy and peace had passed a victim may experience a multitude of emotions. Depression, shame and a lowering of self-esteem are all likely candidates. Some victims have been known to blame themselves and this often occurs when the stalker is an ex partner. In any relationship break-up there are sure to be friends and family who take certain sides. In the event of an ex turning stalker this can prove to be a very bad outcome for the victim who may feel they are being blamed for the change in their ex. How vulnerable this would make the victim feel as their ex is given a free rein to inflict their revenge as they see fit. Crazy as it sounds it does happen.

The sad thing is that long after the stalking has stopped the victim often bears the scars of their terrifying ordeal. How hard it would be to feel safe and secure again not knowing who you could ever trust. It is not often until a stalker is rejected that their true colours emerge. They may seem very attentive and caring at first in their bid to get what they want. The damage done by a stalker to a victim can take years to undo and this is where counselling can be of a great help to restore the victims belief in a life without fear.

Whether a person is an ex or a perfect stranger stalking is an invasion and a serious infringement of a persons human rights. There can be no reasonable excuse for the interfering or harassing of any man woman or child.
